I was sitting on my bed in my bedroom, one lazy sunny Sunday morning, playing a game of snakes and ladders on my Samsung tablet.

Suddenly it occurred to me just how similar the game of snakes and ladders is to life.

Navigating life is like playing a game of snakes and ladders. Making a decision is like throwing the dice. We make choices or rather, we have control over the choices we make (we can choose to do this and that or choose not to do this or that – by the way, even choosing to do nothing is still throwing the dice, it’s a choice) but we don’t always have control of the results of our choices.

For example, if you’re facing some injustice or abuse (domestic violence, sexual harassment, racial discrimination, etc.,) you can choose to keep quiet about it, or choose to report it to the appropriate authorities, or you can simply choose to leave… whatever the choice you make, that’s throwing the dice; you have control over yourself and the choices you make but you usually can’t determine what the result of that choice will be. For example, what the authorities will do after you report the injustice or what will happen if you decide to leave…

Like the snakes and ladders board, some choices land us in the mouths of huge anacondas that take us backwards (homelessness, joblessness etc), some choices take us up the ladder (promotions, wealth, etc) and some choices get us into rockets that push us faster than we ever imagined towards success and achieving our goals!

I like the idea of the analogy between the dice and the choices we make because it has taught me to always, always do the right thing, even when it is not the most convenient thing to do and even if it leads you to a place of uncertainty. When faced with tough choices I always say to myself, “do the right thing and after you’ve done everything you possibly can, surrender it to GOD!” Surrender it to the higher power, the omnipotent and omniscient, surrender it to GOD, whom, I believe, is the only ONE who has control and can determine which number the dice will produce and where that will land you on this unpredictable board of snakes, ladders and rockets that we call life!
